Online Information Databases

To access the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography you will need your library number only if you are accessing from home. 

Here you can access over 63,000 biographies, 75 million words, 12,000 portraits of significant, influential or notorious figures who shaped British history.

Web services such as SCRAN have been retired and combined into a new platform called trove.scot. Up to date information on the resources that they have available can be found on the Historic Environment Scotland website.

Three online encyclopaedias are available in World Book Online - Kids (primary age), Student, (secondary age) Advanced (adults) There are thousands of articles, as well as hundreds of maps, videos, and other media for all ages.

The British Newspaper Archive gives access to millions of pages of British and Irish newspapers from 1703 -2003 including selected local newspapers. Content includes news articles, family notices, obituaries, advertisements and illustrations.

Access from public libraries only and you need to register for a free account.

Access to Research offers over ten million academic articles and research on subjects including art, architecture, business, engineering, history, languages, politics, philosophy, mathematics and the sciences.

You can only visit Access to Research in our public libraries. It is not available to access from home.
