Later he re-named it "Pioneer" after himself) and it is now in the Royal Scottish Museum,the oldest surviving example in Brirain - Eric Leslie Gandar Dower, ex Royal Naval Air Service pilot, Shakespearian actor, producer, founder of Dyce Airport and Aberdeen (later Allied) Airways, Member of Parliament, and man of many parts. Born on 2nd July 1894, his career in aviation effectively spanned the 56 years between 1915 and 1971, when he retired to live out his days in Guernsey, dying peacefully there on October 4th 1987. This portrait shows something of his "Puckish" smile and outward charm, concealing a tough and unyielding character which epitomised his life-style, and contributed to making him a true pioneer.
