Although the Moray Firth ports of Lossiemouth, Portsoy and Banff were served by rail as early as the 1850s, the line linking Portsoy and Elgin along the north-east coast was not completed by the Great North of Scotland Railway Company until 1886. This book relates how the Moray Firth Coast Line was built at a time when the local fishing industry was developing and how it evolved through ownership by various railway companies and during periods of significant financial pressure. The line and its branch to Banff are described. Its services, as part of the routes between Aberdeen and Elgin, are detailed.
