Arthur Lubin directs this thriller set in Victorian London starring husband-and-wife team Jean Simmons and Stewart Granger. As he stands beside his wife's grave in a fogbound churchyard, Stephen Lowry (Granger) thinks he has committed the perfect murder. Unfortunately for him, however, parlour maid Lily (Simmons) knows that he secretly poisoned his wife, and she has the evidence to prove it. Backstabbing and double-crossing ensue as Lily proceeds to blackmail Lowry, with whom she is secretly in love.
