Notes:
'Sandy Ferguson left Greenock High School at 15-years-old without a qualification to his name, but with an avowed intention of becoming a herring fisherman out of his ‘adopted’ village of Carradale, Argyll, where he had spent the duration of the Second World War as an evacuee. To respect his parents’ wishes however, he instead enrolled as a navigation cadet at the James Watt College. Just 10 years later, and notwithstanding his previous academic shortcomings, Sandy qualified as a Foreign Going Ship’s Master at the earliest possible age of 25.'
