A young Jane Austen takes on the role of detective as she seeks to solve the mysterious happenings at the Abbey House School. When the headteacher from their old boarding school invites her past favourite pupil, Cassandra, to attend their end of term prom, Cassandra requests that her younger sister, Jane, comes along too. The Austen sisters are plunged into the feverish excitement of preparing for the biggest event of the year - the dresses, the dances and the boys expected from the neighbouring school. Feeling rather excluded, sharp-witted Jane unearths the reason for the fuss - the headteacher wants to impress a rich family returning from India as the school is at risk of going bankrupt. A diamond-encrusted headband stolen minutes before the ball begins, starts Jane on a quest to uncover the culprit and save a friend from false accusations.
