Forgotten Heroines of the North East

Gibb, Mike2020
Books, Manuscripts
Five women with three things in common. All were born in Aberdeen of Aberdeenshire. All ventured far from their native homes and achieved great things in a male dominated world. The women excelled in very different environments. Mary Garden became the greatest British born opera singer of all time, Torphins born Annie Murray nursed the injured of the International Brigade during the maelstrom of the Spanish Civil War. Missionary Mary Slessor headed for the White Man's Grave and changed the face of Calabar (now part of Nigeria) and the lives of the natives. Maria Ogilvie Gordon from Monymusk earned countless firsts for her scientific works and was a great supporter of the women's suffrage movement. And Lorna Moon traded the gas lights of Strichen for the bright lights of Hollywood.
