Friend me

Averbuch, Sheila M.2020
Books, Manuscripts
Seventh grader Roisin hasn't made a single friend since moving from Ireland to Massachusetts, where her brother collects friends easily, and her parents are absorbed in their high-tech jobs. They don't spot that Roisin is dissolving under constant abuse from a bully at school. The only person who understands is Haley. She's smart, strong, and posts militant, anti-mean-girl memes that make Roisin laugh. They only meet up online, but Haley becomes Roisin's lifeline. Then Roisin's bully has a horrific accident, police investigate, and Roisin panics that the jokes she and Haley shared - about gruesome ways the bully should die - look incriminating. She tries to meet Haley in person, to get her to delete her copies of the messages, but Haley is hiding. She's hacked Roisin's phone, too: pretended to be her and sent abusive messages to the few friends Roisin has started to make.
